The International School of South Africa (ISSA) has hosted the annual high school volleyball festival at their campus in Mahikeng since 2009. The weekend tournament attracts under 19 girls’ and boys’ teams from schools across southern Africa.

All the teams are accommodated in the various hostels on the ISSA school grounds, meals are catered for by the school in the large dining hall, and all games are played on the school’s courts, keeping all the weekend activities very central.

The 2017 tournament took place from Friday 4 August until Sunday 6 August.

A team of very competent external referees made sure that the games were running smoothly and added to the professionalism of the tournament.

After three days of back-to-back volleyball games, Girls High of Zimbabwe claimed the top spot in the girls’ competition against the previous champions Fourways High School.

The boys’ final was an all-german battle of age-old rivals the Deutsche Internationale Schule Pretoria (DSP) and the Deutsche Internationale Schule Johannesburg (DSJ). The boys from Pretoria beat the 2015 winners 3:0 with captain Heiko Damaske also claiming individual awards for the best attacker, best server and most valuable player.

Next year the ISSA volleyball festival will be run for the 10th time and ISSA is hoping for a record turnout.
